Rioting in Port au Prince (PAP)

Last weekend there were demonstrations in Le Cayes and some other cities. The UN shot and killed several women and children in Les Cayes according to a telephone report that I received from a friend in that area.

Yesterday, there were three demonstrations in PAP. One was around the palace area, near MOI, at the Parliament and another location. The UN was out in force with tanks, etc. Then all three demonstrations came together in one central location and that is when it got bad and violent.

Today, there is a lot of demonstrating going on. The gate to the Presidential Palace was broken down by the demonstrators. The protests are violent now.

However, please keep in mind that this is happening in the center of PAP and not in locations where the orphanages are located. Businesses are closed. The U.S. Consulate completely closed down earlier today and all workers went home because of safety concerns.

Prices for basic food items (rice, beans, etc.) and also gasoline have gone up. Inflation is high right now. Gasoline costs about $7.50 to 8.00 per gallon. That iss the reason for the demonstrations.
